Teachers from outside an EEA-qualified state must have three years of teaching experience and be recognised by an EEA member state. If you are working in a private or independent school you will not necessarily need a QTS. However, having a QTS can help you to secure a job, and will mean you will be on the qualified teacher pay scale.

When starting your QTS application online, you should have a few items on-hand first:. Evidence that you are qualified to teach can often be checked online. If so, be prepared to provide this information to the Teaching Regulation Agency TRA so that they can certify that you are licensed to teach in your territory. If your Department of Education does not provide online checking, you will need to supply a letter from a recognised authority stating that you have completed the appropriate training, you have satisfied additional requirements including necessary experience, and that you are not banned from teaching in your country.

Once this process has been completed, you will receive a letter confirming you have been granted QTS, and you are ready to teach in England and Wales. Once you have gained QTS, you will become a Newly Qualified Teacher, and your training will continue for one year also known as the probationary period. Having QTS also means you will be paid on the British pay scale, which provides a minimum and maximum pay amount for teachers, depending on the local authority where you teach.

You will be eligible for performance reviews, and potential pay raises, depending on your demonstrated competency and achievements. In the UK, your salary raises are closely linked with your performance, so the opportunities to achieve raises in pay are exciting recognition of hard work and dedication. You will build on your academic writing skills and will investigate a range of differing perspectives on learning. You will also have the opportunity to explore a variety of approaches to teaching, examining the effectiveness of each of these, as well as exploring relevant issues — for example, the use of social media as a teaching tool — and their impact in the classroom.

This module will introduce you to the processes of conducting your own research, including ethics and a range of methods commonly used in education. It will see you working together in groups with other students, supported by a tutor. During the study of this module you will build on your knowledge of foundation subjects and religious education, and consider global aspects of learning.

You will explore a range of approaches to teaching and learning, considering different cultural contexts.

This module will further develop your subject and pedagogical knowledge in the core subjects. You will be expected to take responsibility for identifying and developing your needs, with a particular focus taken on different approaches to planning in the core. It comprises a solo school placement, usually of 7 weeks, in your chosen age phase, allowing you to develop your knowledge, understanding and application in that age phase.

Explore aspects of critical thinking relating to current issues in education, such as obesity amongst younger children, as well as looking forward to future career directions. You will consider your wider role in the school environment and your transition from student to teacher, examining how this can be undertaken effectively.

This module builds on previous experience with research and will see you conducting individual research projects in education. You will design your own study, formulating questions, choosing appropriate methods for the methodology, collecting and analysing data, and taking responsibility for ethical practice. This module continues to develop your understanding of teaching and learning in the core subjects but expands to consider national and international perspectives, contemporary and alternative approaches. You will be expected to draw on what you have learned to articulate and justify your own beliefs about teaching and learning in the core.

Joy trained as a Primary School teacher and started her teaching career in the London Borough of Brent. She has taught in America, Staffordshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Following her experience in schools she worked as an advisor in Worcestershire Local Authority in the area of School Workforce, providing guidance and support to school leaders on professional development and deployment of support staff.

Her research interests include action research and how policy informs practice in ITT. Joy is currently studying for a Doctorate in Education at University College London, researching the impact of how schools and universities can work collaboratively to support Initial Teacher Education within the different routes into teaching. The University places emphasis on enabling students to develop the independent learning capabilities that will equip you for lifelong learning and future employment, as well as academic achievement.

A mixture of independent study, teaching and academic support through the personal academic tutoring system enables you to reflect on progress. You will build up a profile of skills, achievements and experiences that will enable you to flourish and be successful.

You are taught through a combination of interactive seminars, workshops and lectures. The seminars will enable you to link educational theory to practice through reflection and evaluation. You will have seminars in all National Curriculum subjects to enable you to experience the full range of educational provision in primary schools. Practical subjects will be taught in specialist spaces such as DT rooms, gymnasiums and dance studios.

You will have the opportunity to plan and deliver lessons in your seminar rooms and then take them into placement to teach in the classroom. Following placement your seminars will give you opportunities to discuss your teaching - what went well and what changes you would make in the future - linked to the Teachers' Standards.
